If you need a current update, or you are planning to become a radiation safety officer, don’t miss this opportunity to obtain the technical and practical information from one of the most authoritative persons in the industry. A targeted approach to the information most useful for introduction to a medical RSO is investigated. Satisfying state requirements for specialized training can be accomplished in this educational activity.

Objectives

At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Explain the basic theories related to nuclear and atomic physics.
  2. List early and latent effects of radiation exposure
  3. Identify radiation detection instruments and their basic functions.
  4. List methods of minimizing external radiation exposure in both routine and high dose work areas.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of methods of measuring radiation exposure in the radiation worker.
  6. Identify the response process related to radiation-related emergency (i.e. spill, exposed patient).
  7. List methods of securing radioactive waste in the medical setting.
  8. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the performance of wipe and sealed source leak testing.

Dr. Montz is the Associate Dean of Allied Health at Salt Lake Community College. Prior to her position at SLCC, she was both a high school and college women's basketball coach before joining the healthcare profession as a nuclear medicine technologist. During her time as a nuclear medicine technologist, she had the privilege of working at renowned organizations such as Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center while pursuing her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Texas Woman's University in 2013. Her MBA led her to a career in higher education where she served as the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program Director at Galveston College from 20113-2019. In 2018, she earned her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Lamar University. She has been a faculty member at AHEC for several years, teaching courses in nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, radiation safety and diagnostic imaging. Rebecca loves education and it show in her ability to hold the interest of participants in all her classes.
