Upon completing this course, participants will achieve the following learning outcomes:

Patient Care:

  1. Establish effective communication with patients, use clear and age-appropriate language to explain procedures and obtain cooperation, and employ therapeutic techniques to address patient anxiety, cultural differences, and special needs
  2. Obtain and document patient history, and respect patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality
  3. Prepare patients for imaging procedures, including proper attire, positioning, and removal of artifacts
  4. Safely position patients and assess their readiness for imaging procedures
  5. Monitor patients' physical and emotional status before, during, and after procedures and respond to signs of distress
  6. Safely prepare and administer contrast media while monitoring for adverse reactions
  7. Adapt care to meet the needs of diverse patient populations, such as pediatric, geriatric, and special needs patients, and show sensitivity to patients experiencing trauma or abuse

Emergency Response:

  1. Recognize signs and symptoms of medical emergencies, perform basic life support techniques, and administer first aid for minor injuries
  2. Communicate effectively with emergency personnel and follow facility protocols for reporting emergencies

Radiation Safety:

  1. Understand principles of x-ray production, interactions with matter, and factors affecting x-ray beam quality
  2. Understand biological effects of radiation exposure, including stochastic and deterministic effects
  3. Implement radiation protection practices, including the principles of ALARA, use of PPE, and patient shielding

Image Production:

  1. Explain principles of x-ray image production and factors affecting image quality
  2. Analyze radiographic images for artifacts and anatomical accuracy, and evaluate images for penetration, density, and contrast
  3. Operate radiographic equipment safely and effectively
  4. Apply quality assurance protocols to maintain equipment performance and ensure optimal image quality

Procedures:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in patient positioning, use of topographic landmarks, and alignment of central ray
  2. Understand anatomical, physiological, and pathological aspects relevant to x-ray imaging
  3. Adapt procedures to accommodate patient-specific factors and clinical conditions
  4. Evaluate radiographic images for diagnostic quality and accuracy
