Are you interested in cross-training into Mammography? With over 33 years of experience teaching mammography, we’ve developed our curriculum to help technologists successfully enter the field of mammography and meet MQSA training requirements.
Mammography Initial Training Option 2 includes MQSA-required didactic education plus assistance completing the initial 25 supervised mammography procedures required to begin performing mammograms.
WHO SHOULD ENROLL
Mammography Initial Training Option 2 is designed for technologists who:
• Cannot complete their initial 25 MQSA procedures at their current facility
• Are not currently employed in mammography
• Need assistance securing a clinical site for supervised mammography procedures
ARRT certification and/or a fully unrestricted state license are required for admission to the Mammography Initial Training course.
WHAT MAKES THIS COURSE DIFFERENT
A half-day is dedicated to hands-on positioning and QC training at our affiliate hospital. This hands-on approach helps technologists build confidence before beginning supervised patient procedures. Student evaluations consistently confirm this is a “must-have” positioning experience.
COURSE INCLUDES
The curriculum for “Mammography Initial Training Option 2” provides the didactic education and initial supervised clinical procedures required by MQSA for technologists entering mammography.
The course includes:
• 24 hours of MQSA core competency training
• 8 hours of Digital Mammography Modality Specific Training
• 8 hours of Tomosynthesis (DBT) Modality Specific Training
• Hands-on positioning and QC training
• Assistance coordinating a clinical site in Houston, Texas for the initial 25 MQSA procedures
Clinical placement requires completion of the DBT training.
You will be awarded 40 hours of Category A credit for the five-day course. The course satisfies the 16 hours of structured education requirement to apply for the ARRT Post-Primary Mammography Certification Examination. This course also meets guidelines for states requiring special education for mammography.
MQSA VS. ARRT REQUIREMENTS
MQSA qualification allows a technologist to begin performing mammograms after completing:
• Required didactic education
• 25 supervised mammography procedures
ARRT Mammography Certification requires additional documented clinical experience beyond MQSA qualification.
IMPORTANT
Option 2 does NOT include the additional ARRT clinical experience requirements needed to sit for the ARRT Mammography Certification Examination.
The clinical placement included with Option 2 is designed ONLY to help technologists complete the initial 25 supervised mammography procedures required under MQSA.
Technologists pursuing ARRT Mammography Certification must complete additional documented procedures beyond the initial 25 MQSA procedures. These additional procedures are NOT included as part of AHEC’s clinical placement program.
Additional ARRT clinical experience requirements are typically completed through employment or ongoing clinical practice after MQSA qualification is achieved.
CLINICAL PLACEMENT INFORMATION
If your facility is unable to supervise the initial 25 MQSA procedures, or you are not currently employed, AHEC can facilitate a clinical site in Houston, Texas for completion of these initial supervised procedures.
The included two/three clinical days are intended to help the technologist complete the initial 25 MQSA procedures required for qualification. No CE credit is awarded for the clinical days.
Clinical placement is limited and completed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Clinical days begin Tuesday-Wednesday immediately following the five-day course. Placement continues in concurrent two/three day blocks after the Tuesday-Wednesday block is full. Clinical assignments occur during weekdays only.
REGISTRATION & SCHEDULING
You must register at least eight weeks prior to the class to allow adequate time to complete all clinical placement requirements.
LIMITED CLINICAL SPOTS AVAILABLE!
To reserve clinical placement, AHEC must receive:
• Registration
• Payment in full
• All required clinical placement paperwork
An email will be sent after registration with a list of required clinical placement documents.
Every effort is made to schedule clinical days convenient for you; however, due to limited availability, scheduling is completed on a first-come, first-served basis.
