  • An Update on Breast Ultrasound 

  • Axillary Ultrasound for Nodal Staging 

Objectives: 

  1. To appreciate the role of ultrasound in screening for breast cancer. 

  1. To understand how ultrasound is used in diagnosing breast cancer. 

  1. To appreciate the role of ultrasound in guiding procedures in the breast and the regional lymph nodes. 

  1. To understand the role of ultrasound in staging the regional lymph nodes. 

  1. To appreciate the value of FNA and core biopsy in sampling the regional lymph nodes. 

  1. To review the advantages and disadvantages of axillary lymph node dissection and sentinel lymph node biopsy

Knowledge: Acquire the fundamental knowledge needed to incorporate/improve breast imaging assessments into their scope of clinical practice to produce quality images while minimizing radiation exposure to patients.

rnDr. Gary J Whitman is a tenured professor of radiology and radiation oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he serves as the medical director of the mobile mammography program. Dr. Whitman joined the MDACC faculty in 1996 after serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.rnrnDr. Whitman is the current chair of the MDACC Faculty Senate and he serves on the institutional executive committee and the Physicians Referral Service executive committee.rnrnDr. Whitman is a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, the Society of Ultrasound in Radiology, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. Dr. Whitman is the president of the Association of University Radiologists, and he is the program chair for the American Roentgen Ray Society. Dr. Whitman is the vice chair of the RSNA News, published by the Radiological Society of North America.rnrnDr. Whitman is interested in all areas of breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. Dr. Whitman's research interests include high risk screening, high risk breast lesions, digital mammography, and MRI-guided interventional procedures.
